What is a Tentacle?

A Tentacle is a posting chain that links multiple social accounts together under one brand. When you add content to a Tentacle's queue, it gets posted to each connected platform — optionally with delays between them. For example: YouTube immediately, then Instagram 30 minutes later, then TikTok an hour after that.

Think of it as a pipeline: content goes in one end, and comes out published on every platform you've connected.

Creating a Tentacle

  1. 1

    Go to the Tentacles page

    Click Tentacles in the sidebar.
  2. 2

    Click "+ New Chain"

Enter a brand name — this is how you'll identify this posting chain (e.g., "TopFloorClips" or "Personal Brand").
  3. 3

    Add platforms

Click "Add Platform" and select which connected accounts to include. Set an optional delay for each platform to stagger your posts.

Tentacle settings

Brand Prompt

A custom instruction for AI caption generation. Tells the AI your brand's voice, tone, hashtag preferences, and style rules.

Auto AI Captions

When enabled, any queue item without a caption will have one generated automatically before posting. Great for batch workflows.

Video Transcription

When enabled, Octopost transcribes your video's audio and uses the transcript as context for AI caption generation. Best for spoken content.

Test Run

Toggle test mode to preview the posting flow without actually publishing. Useful for verifying your chain is set up correctly.

Active / Pause

The main toggle that controls whether the Tentacle processes its queue. Pause to temporarily stop posting without losing your queue.

Platform delays

Each platform in a chain can have a delay (in minutes) before it posts. The first platform posts immediately when the queue item is processed, and subsequent platforms wait for their configured delay. This prevents flooding all platforms at the same instant and can help with cross-platform engagement strategies.

A common pattern: post to YouTube first (for the long-form content), then Instagram Reels 30 minutes later (to capture the audience that missed it), then TikTok an hour later (peak hours might differ).

Adding content to a Tentacle

On the Compose page, switch the post mode to "Queue" and select which Tentacle to add content to. The content joins the Tentacle's queue and will be posted in order. You can also manage the queue directly on the Queue page.

Each Tentacle has a queue limit based on your plan. Free accounts get 10 items per queue, Creator gets 50, and Agency is unlimited.
